Member Nation : Romania
Romania is a country located at the crossroads of Central, Eastern, and Southeast Europe. It
has a mainly continental climate.
Its capital and largest city is Bucharest, also called
Little Paris, followed by Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Timișoara, Constanța, Craiova, Brașov, and Galați.
Europe's second-longest river, the Danube, empties into the Danube Delta in the southeast of
the country.
Culture
Romania's culture is a rich blend of Eastern European, Balkan, and Latin influences, shaped by its long history and diverse geography. Folk traditions are deeply rooted, with vibrant music, dance, and artisanal crafts, such as complex wood carvings and textiles.
Ethnic Cuisine
Romanian cuisine reflects its agricultural roots. One of the most iconic dishes is sarmale,
cabbage leaves stuffed with a mix of minced pork, rice, and spices, often served with sour
cream and mămăligă—a creamy cornmeal porridge like polenta. Mămăligă itself is a staple in
Romanian cuisine, and can be served as a side dish with stews or cheese.
- Mititei (or mici), small grilled sausages made from a blend of beef, lamb, and pork, spiced with
garlic and served with mustard, are popular street food, especially during festivals. Soups also
play a vital role, with ciorbă (a sour soup) being a common starter.
Ethnic Clothing
Traditional clothing is typically handmade, with each piece telling a story through its designs, colors, and craftsmanship. One of the most iconic elements of Romanian traditional clothing is the ie, a white blouse/shirt with embroidery that is specific to different regions and feature geometric, floral, or symbolic motifs in bright colors. For women, the blouse is typically paired with a white skirt and a fota or catrință, a woven or embroidered wraparound skirt. For men, they wear the white ie with a vest and pants, made of wool or linen and are worn with a wide belt. Traditional footwear is opinci, a leather shoe tied around the ankles with laces.
